CS Freshmen visited Security and Privacy Lab during Fall 2018 Open Week

Time: August 27, 2018

Location: Secure and Privacy lab @Rekhi 318

During the first day of university open week, there were more than 170 freshmen joining Computer Science Department at Michigan Technological University.  The SnP lab hosted the new students and presented to them a few fun cyber security projects.

There were 1 faculty, 3 students from the SnP lab involved in this activity: Bo Chen (Assistant Professor in CS department, Director of SnP lab), Niusen Chen (PhD student), Manu Nandan Chemudupati (MS student), and Alex Larkin (undergraduate student).

Figure 1 and 2: Dr. Bo Chen is introducing the flash memory security projects in SnP lab. The project aims to protect confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data stored in flash storage media, which are used broadly in mobile computing devices like smart phones, tablets, wearable devices, IoT devices. The research results have appeared in prestigious conferences and journals, and one result about flash memory data recovery from malware attacks got the outstanding paper award in ACSAC ’17.

Figure 3: Niusen Chen is showing how to program flash firmware to incorporate secure strategies into flash storage devices. Niusen joined our PhD program since Fall 2018, under the supervision of Dr. Chen. He received his MS degree from University of Florida, and his BS degree from Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai). He is currently working with Dr. Chen for flash memory security.

Figure 4: Manu Nandan Chemudupati is introducing his project on phishing link detection. The prototype he built can tell whether a given link is malicious or not. His next step will build plugins for browsers and emails, by which a user’s email terminal or browser can automatically detect the malicious links and sends out a warning. Manu joined our MS program in Spring 2018, and is currently working with Dr. Chen for web security.

Figure 5: Alex Larkin is introducing his demo of man-in-the-middle attack. By using Wireshark to capture and analyze the network packages, Alex showed how to extract sensitive information from the network packages.  Alex joined our BS program in Fall 2017, and is working on the cybersecurity competition under the supervision of Dr. Chen. He was placed 36th out of 3,350 students/players in the 2018 National Cyber League (NCL) cybersecurity competition during Spring 2018 regular season (https://blogs.mtu.edu/cs/2018/05/04/alex-larkin-cs-undergrad-achieves-a-national-ncl-ranking/).
